Film Trailer Conventions

The main aim of a film trailer is to make the audience want to go and see the film. It provides an insight into the narrative and displays key moments, for example the most tense or funny moments, depending on the genre.

Conventions:

  • Trailers are typically around 2 minutes long
  • They provide the audience with information about the film, such as the name, producer/production company, director and release date
  • They give an outline of the film, without giving away the ending, as this leaves them with suspense and therefore wanting to see the rest of the film
  • They usually have background music that is associated with the genre
  • Show the audience the main settings of the film in order to familiarise them
  • Introduces the main characters
